BJP MP Kangana Ranaut Allegedly Slapped by CISF Constable at Chandigarh Airport Over Farmer Protest Comments

New Delhi: BJP MP and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, recently elected from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi constituency, was reportedly slapped by a CISF constable at Chandigarh Airport. The incident occurred while Ms. Ranaut was preparing to board a flight to Delhi.

The constable, identified as Kulwinder Kaur, has been suspended following the altercation and an FIR has been filed against her. The confrontation reportedly stemmed from Ms. Ranaut’s previous remarks perceived as disrespectful towards farmers, particularly referencing the 15-month-long protest against the now-repealed farm laws and the demand for a legal guarantee of minimum support prices.

Mobile footage captured Ms. Ranaut being escorted by security personnel towards the security check-in area, where she engaged in a conversation with CISF officers. The CISF Commandant is currently investigating the incident, and local police have also been informed.

Ms. Ranaut did not address the media upon arriving in Delhi. Earlier in the day, she posted a photo on Instagram with the caption, “On my way to parliament. Mandi ki sansad.”

In a video statement on social media platform X, Ms. Ranaut assured her followers of her safety but expressed concerns about rising terrorism in Punjab. She recounted the incident, stating that the constable approached and hit her at the security check-in, using expletives and declaring support for farmers. Ms. Ranaut linked the assault to a larger issue of terrorism in Punjab.

The constable reportedly expressed anger over Ms. Ranaut’s past comment during the farmers’ protest, where she suggested that protesters could be hired for ₹100. This remark had previously sparked outrage, especially among those supporting the farmers’ cause.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee’s chief, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, had demanded an unconditional apology from Ms. Ranaut for her statement. During her election campaign, Ms. Ranaut’s convoy was blocked by protesting farmers in Chandigarh.

In response to international criticism during the protests, including a tweet by pop star Rihanna, Ms. Ranaut had labeled the protesting farmers as terrorists, a post she later deleted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi eventually announced the withdrawal of the contentious farm laws in November 2021, addressing the concerns that the laws would eliminate MSP and lead to the corporatization of agriculture.
